Medicinal Marijuana Use in Arizona

Medicinal Marijuana

Arizona’s medical marijuana program was established through the Arizona Medical Marijuana Act (AMMA), approved by voters in 2010. The program allows patients with qualifying medical conditions, such as chronic pain, cancer, or epilepsy, to obtain a medical marijuana card with a physician’s recommendation. Cardholders can legally purchase up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana every two weeks from state-licensed dispensaries and may grow up to 12 plants if they live more than 25 miles from a dispensary. The AMMA also provides legal protections for registered patients, caregivers, and dispensaries, ensuring they are not prosecuted for actions compliant with the law. Employers are prohibited from discriminating against medical marijuana cardholders, though workplace use and impairment remain restricted. The program is regulated by the Arizona Department of Health Services, which oversees dispensary licensing, patient registration, and compliance with state rules.
